The Special Effects Created by a Luoyang Company Help “Ne Zha” Break Records
With smoky eyes, shark teeth, and hands in the pockets, the film Ne Zha has struck a chord with many viewers because the protagonist is depicted as an unlikely hero who fights his destiny. As his life motto, “My destiny is not written in the stars, but held in my hands.” also expressed his fighting spirit. As of August 11, Ne Zha has become the highest-grossing domestic animated film on the Chinese mainland, with a total box office of more than 3.4 billion yuan.
Ne Zha continues smashing records, giving the public more confidence towards China’s animation. The film has more than 1,100 shots, and 1,100 are special-effect shots, accounting for nearly 100 percent. Among them, the special effects of several shots like “Nezha finds and chases Yecha” and “Nezha, Aobing (the Dragon King’s third son) and Yecha are fighting by the sea” are produced by a Luoyang company.
Li Zongkun, special-effect director of Luoyang Yino Culture Development Co. Ltd, told the reporter, “We created some special effects for Ne Zha. Since the special effects need a sense of reality and require the production team to accurately grasp the style, atmosphere and tone of the film, the director went over every detail, and our special effects team was even working around the clock in order to purse a better visual effect during that time.”
“The sense of reality depends on the vivid restoration of every detail. In the film, Nezha is chasing Yecha to the beach, but the wet sand and dry sand may have different visual effect when he stands on. For example, the footprint edge on the wet sand should be relatively sharp since the wet sand has a good viscosity, which is different from the dry sand.”
To make good special effects, life experience is also important apart from technology. Li’s colleague told the reporter that when the grill caught fire during a dinner party, the first reaction of other customers was to run, but the reaction of the special effects artist was to observe the shape and details of the real flame.
